Guideline

What is this document?

This document lists the variable names, variable labels, variable types, question wording and response categories for each question from the GSS dataset.

Table A. Guideline of variable types

Variable type It means
Binary (categorical) Binary variable: it has two responses
Nominal (categorical) Nominal variable: it has more than two responses
Ordinal (categorical) Ordinal variable: same as nominal variable, but there is a logical order among categories
Ordinal ✅ (categorical) ✅ next to an ordinal variable indicates that these ordinal variables could be treated as continuous
Continuous Continuous variable: numeric variables; real numbers
COMPUTE-A, COMPUTE-B, ... Indicates that it can be computed together with other variables marked with the same COMPUTE letter under the same table. Note that the computed variable will be continuous.
RECODE Indicates that they should be recoded (the direction of the responses should be reversed) before computation or treating them as continuous. After recoding, the new (recoded) variables should be used in analysis.
